If you’re adopting a kitten this fall, you’re in for a season full of playful surprises. Before long, they’ll be chasing toys, discovering cozy napping spots, and investigating every corner of your home with endless curiosity. As exciting as those first weeks are, they’re also the perfect time to establish healthy habits that will benefit your kitten for a lifetime.

At Family Pet Hospital of Stone Oak in San Antonio, we help new pet owners navigate the first year with wellness and preventive care, personalized guidance, and plenty of support along the way.

Your Kitten’s First Vet Visit Should Happen Early

Scheduling your kitten’s first vet visit is one of the best ways to set them up for a healthy first year in San Antonio. We recommend booking your kitten’s first checkup as soon as possible, ideally by 6 weeks of age.

During that first appointment, our veterinarians will perform a nose-to-tail physical exam, check for intestinal parasites and other common health concerns, discuss nutrition, and answer any questions you have about caring for your new pet. It’s also a great opportunity to talk about litter box habits, behavior, and what to expect as your kitten grows.

Because kittens develop so quickly, they’ll need more than one wellness visit. We recommend exams every three weeks until they’re about 15 to 17 weeks old. After that, most healthy cats transition to wellness and preventive care visits twice a year.

Following Your Kitten Vaccine Schedule

While they receive some temporary immune system protection from their mother, that protection gradually fades. That’s why following a kitten vaccine schedule is so important during the first few months of life.

You can typically expect:

  • FVRCP vaccinations beginning around 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3 to 4 weeks until at least 16 weeks. This vaccine protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (feline distemper).
  • A rabies vaccine at the appropriate age, following your veterinarian’s recommendations and Texas requirements
  • Feline leukemia (FeLV) vaccination during the first year
  • Routine deworming, parasite screenings, and year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention

Keeping up with these visits gives your kitten the best protection while their immune system is still developing.

A New Kitten Checklist for a Smooth Transition

Veterinary visits are just one part of helping your kitten settle into their new home. Before the big day arrives, gather a few essentials to help your new companion feel right at home:

  • High-quality kitten food
  • Food and water bowls
  • A litter box and unscented litter
  • A secure carrier for travel
  • Scratching posts or pads
  • Interactive toys for exercise and enrichment
  • A cozy bed or quiet place to rest

Before your kitten arrives, take a few minutes to look at your home from their point of view. Secure electrical cords and put away toxic plants, medications, cleaning products, string, hair ties, and other tempting objects that could be chewed or swallowed.
